Muscle Relaxant Injections

Muscle relaxant injections are a non surgical treatment commonly used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.  It works by relaxing facial and neck muscles thereby stretching the skin above.  Muscle relaxant injections may also be used to treat bruxism or teeth grinding as well as treat excessive sweating.

Wrinkle Treatment

Muscle relaxants act as an effective wrinkle treatment for wrinkles that have already formed.  These wrinkles are known as static wrinkles.  Muscle relaxants work by  relaxing the facial muscles which help to stretch out the skin above.  When this happens the wrinkles are effectively ironed out.

Muscle relaxants are also useful in the treatment of dynamic wrinkles – the wrinkles that can be only be seen when we use facial expression.  By relaxing the facial muscles we are no longer able to form facial expressions which cause the skin to wrinkle.

Wrinkle Smoothing

As discussed above, it is possible with the use of muscle relaxing injections to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.  Dynamic wrinkles can be prevented from becoming static wrinkles and static wrinkles can be prevented form becoming deeper wrinkles.

Wrinkle Prevention

Muscle relaxants are most effective on wrinkles that have not yet “set”.  These wrinkles are termed as “dynamic wrinkles”. Dynamic wrinkles may be seen only when our facial muscles form facial expressions.  If you don’t use the facials muscles too much which is the case when muscle relaxants are injected then the wrinkles cannot form.  In essence muscle relaxants can help to prevent  dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles.  This is precisely the reason younger and younger people are using muscle relaxants to help prevent formation of static wrinkles and to maintain a youthful appearance.

Wrinkle Reduction

Muscle relaxants act to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by stretching the skin.  Whilst muscle relaxants can help reduce the appearance and wrinkles and help prevent wrinkles from forming, they cannot remove wrinkles entirely. Deeper wrinkles especially, cannot be effectively treated using muscle relaxants.  For deeper wrinkles it is best to use dermal fillers to fill the skin under the wrinkle to create more volume under the skin.

What Are Anti Wrinkle Injections?

Anti wrinkle injections also known as muscle relaxing injections are made from botulinum toxin.  This is a natural and purified protein that is made from bacteria  in a similar way that penicillin is made from mould.  The protein relaxes the muscles under the skin preventing  dynamic wrinkles from forming.

How does it work?

When we use facial expressions such as laughing squinting or frowning the muscles under the skin contract and at the same time cause the skin to fold causing wrinkles.  These are known as dynamic wrinkles and disappear when your muscles relax.  After a while however the dynamic wrinkles can set and form static wrinkles that do not go away when you stop smiling.  This is a bit like bending a piece of paper until the bending action eventually forms a crinkle.

Botulinum toxin works by preventing the  signals from the nerve endings reaching the muscle and causing muscle contraction.  To be more precise, botulinum toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings thus preventing contraction of the muscle cells.  The muscle cells will relax and lengthen, effectively stretching the skin above and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Are Anti Wrinkle Injections Safe?

Yes, anti wrinkle treatments are very safe.  They have been used for over twenty years without any known adverse affects.  They are approved for use by the TGA of Australia.

Side effects can happen but are rare.  Mild bruising can sometimes occur when the needle damages a vein occasionally drooping of the eyelids or eyebrow  can occur if injections are placed to close to this area. The key is to choose an experienced  doctor  trained in aesthetic medicine.  This way side effects of anti wrinkle treatments can be minimised.  By having a doctor looking after you you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

What to Expect?

At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we understand that it can be a bit daunting when you don’t know what to expect.  However with some explanation and understanding of the treatment process involved, most clients feel much more confident to undergo their first treatment.

This guide should give you some  more insight into what is involved in anti wrinkle injection treatment, pre, during and post the treatment.

Pre-Treatment Process

Prior to the treatment Dr Targett will provide you with a free consultation during which she will listen to what you wish to achieve and determine  what desired look you are seeking.  She will take a full medical history from you and determine if you are a suitable candidate for anti wrinkle treatments.

To help you make an informed decision and for you to decide if anti wrinkle injections are right for you Dr Targett will discuss, the treatment process, what alternatives there might be to anti wrinkle injections, any potential side affects and post treatment care.

Once you decide to proceed with anti wrinkle treatments (which will usually be scheduled on a another day to give you time to consider), then a detailed personal  treatment plan will be drawn up to address your desired needs and to achieve outstanding visible results.

Pre and post photos will be taken of your face for comparison and to determine the success of your treatment.  Often clients forget what they looked like before their treatment and are surprised when they are shown.

During Treatment

During the treatment you will be seated on a cosmetic bed in a slightly reclined position for easy access by the doctor.  Your face will be cleaned with an antiseptic cleanser to help prevent any infection.  The treatment area will be mapped out to achieve accuracy and the desired result.

Anti wrinkle injections are then injected into the target facial muscles to cause them to relax.  Very fine needles are used for the injections, which should cause minimal discomfort. The procedure is very quick to perform.  For those that feel they cannot cope with needles a topical anaesthetic may be applied to the skin before the procedure.

Post-treatment process

After the treatment you may notice tiny bumps at the injection sites.  These should normally settle within half an hour.  There is no down time for this procedure and you may return to work following the treatment.

post treatment care includes;

  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Do not apply pressure to the treated area
  • Do not massage the treated area or wear glasses or hats.
  • Refrain from strenuous exercise

Do Anti Wrinkle Treatments Prevent Ageing?

Anti wrinkle treatments cannot prevent ageing, however they can help to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles.  Anti wrinkle treatments cannot help to prevent the loss of facial volume that we experience as we get older.  Skin Needling, Factor 4 and Laser Genesis treatments  are treatments that can all enhance production of collagen and elastin to maintain facial volume.

Natural looking Results

At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we pride ourselves on achieving natural looking results.  The goal is to achieve a natural looking result whereby you can still use facial expressions and don’t have a stiff frozen appearance.  Dr Targett has mastered the art of knowing where and how much to inject to achieve this goal.

Can Dermal Fillers and Anti Wrinkle Injections Be Used Together?

Yes. This is often referred to as a liquid facelift.  By using a combination of anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, remarkable facial rejuvenation can be achieved.  Often the static wrinkles are too deep for anti wrinkle injections to remove, this is where dermal fillers come into play.  Ageing is associated with wrinkles as well as a loss of official volume.  Dermal fillers address the loss of facial volume.

Do The Injections Hurt?

Anti wrinkle injections are almost pain free except for the sensation of a small scratch.  The needles used are very fine, so do not hurt much.  For clients that are over anxious about needles, a topical anaesthetic can be used to make the procedure more tolerable.

When Will I See The Results?

Depending on the brand of anti wrinkle injections that you have, the time to see results will be variable.  In general results can be seen within two to three days of having anti wrinkle treatments.  However it may take up to seven to ten days in some cases.  Everyone reacts to anti wrinkle treatments in different ways.

How Long Do The Effects Last?

The results should last from three to four months.  Again, this varies from person to person.

How Do I Maintain The Results?

Regular treatments every three months will help ensure that the results will be lasting for you.  The good thing about having regular treatments is that it can help prevent dynamic wrinkles turning into static wrinkles.  It is becoming the trend now for younger people to have anti wrinkle treatments, purely to help prevent future wrinkles from forming.

Is There Any Downtime?

There is usually no downtime and you can return to normal daily activities straight away.  However we do not advise having anti wrinkle treatments prior to an important event.  There is always a rare possibility of bruising or other side effect.

Are There Any Contraindications to Anti Wrinkle Injections?

  • Pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
  • Allery to Boyulinum Toxin
  • Taking Aminoglycosides
  • Allergy to human albumin
  • Prior facial surgery
  • Neurological disorders

What Are The Possible Side Effects?

Complications and side effects are uncommon, however they do sometimes occur.  The symptoms usually go away quickly, however in some instances the symptoms may last for several months.

Possible side effects include;

  • Bruising, pain, swelling at the site of the injection.  Usually clears after seven days.
  • Headaches sometimes occur after the injections.  They usually last less than 24hours and can be treated with paracetamol.
  • Twitching and numbness in the treated area. Usually last only a few days.
  • Eybrow drooping or double vision.  It is temporary, lasting a few weeks only.
  • Allergic reaction to Botulinum Toxin. Very rare.

It is important that you are teated by a doctor trained in Aesthetic Medicine, so that you will receive the best care.

Advanced Cosmetic Medicine Reviews

Anti Wrinkle Injections (Botulinum Toxoid) Have a Number of Applications.

Forehead Wrinkles

As the name suggests “Forehead Wrinkles” appear on the forehead.  When you raise your eyebrows up the lines on the forehead become apparent.  Dynamic wrinkles with facial movements like this can become static wrinkles over time, in which case the wrinkles on the forehead would still be apparent even without facial movement.

Crows Feet

“Crows Feet” are the wrinkles that appear  around the corners of the eyes when we smile or squint in the sun.  The wrinkles are caused by contraction of the muscles under the skin.  As we age the skin loses hyaluronic acid and collagen which makes the effect worse.  Eventually these wrinkles become static.

Gummy Smile

Gummy Smile is a phenomenon that when some people smile, their upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth, exposing gums and producing an unattractive smile.

Hyperhidrosis

However, some people have ‘excessive sweating’, where the amount of sweat produced is above normal and interferes with daily life. This is a medical condition called “hyperhidrosis.”

Bunnny Lines

‘Bunny lines’ describe straight, slightly diagonal lines that extend from both sides of the nose, beneath the bridge, when someone smiles or laughs.

Jaw Slimming

An excessive wide jaw that can create a square shaped lower face, is a largely common problem. While the square jaw may be desirable in men, it is not a feminine appearance.

Bruxism

Many people are unaware that they grind their teeth because they do it while they sleep. Bruxism often occurs in the early part of the night and can disturb sleep partners.

Droopy Jowls

The jowls refer to the lower part of a person’s cheek and as we get older they becomes fleshier and more droopy. This is one of the most common facial features that people associate with getting older and it tends to affect women more than men

Migraine Treatment

Most people do not realise that botulinum toxoid injected at strategic places around the scalp, provides an effective treatment for migraine sufferers.

Dimpled Chin

As the name suggests “Forehead Wrinkles” appear on the forehead.  When you raise your eyebrows up the lines on the forehead become apparent.  Dynamic wrinkles with facial movements like this can become static wrinkles over time, in which case the wrinkles on the forehead would still be apparent even without facial movement.

Frown Lines

Frown lines are vertical lines between and above your eye brow that are the result from frowning and ageing skin. Similar to forehead lines, as we age these frown lines become more prominent.

Lip Lines

Smoker’s lips  or lip lines are small lines that etch the lips and may extend vertically from the lips. They are often first noticed when lipstick starts to ‘bleed’ out of the vermilion border (the border between the lip and adjacent skin) into the vertical fine lines around the mouth.

Eyebrow Lift

This procedure can also be referred to as the “brow arch procedure”. The injections can cause brow elevation and therefore can improve the shape of brow arch and position of eye brows. Eyes appear more relaxed, refreshed and wider.
