How does it work?

Botulinum toxin can be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, effectively leaving the muscles without instructions to contract, therefore paralyzing them.

In order for muscles to contract, nerves release a chemical messenger, acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter), at the junction where the nerve endings meet muscle cells. The acetylcholine attaches to receptors on the muscle cells and causes the muscle cells to contract or shorten. Injected botulinum toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine, preventing contraction of the muscle cells. The effect of botulinum toxin causes a reduction in abnormal muscle contraction allowing the muscles to become less stiff.

Anti-Wrinkle treatments help to reduce your unwanted wrinkles including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
  • Horizontal forehead lines and eyebrow lifting
  • Lines above the lip and gummy smile
  • Dimples on chin
  • Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating)

Anti Wrinkle Injections for the Eye Area

Eyes are an important feature for many women and they’re often the first area women would like to address when they start thinking about non-surgical options. It’s not surprising, as they’re the focus of our face, but we want them to attract attention for the right reasons.

When we’re younger, our skin springs back easily when we make facial expressions, however with age, our skin loses some of the elasticity we once took for granted. This loss of bounce combines with the repeated muscular action required to smile, squint or cry to cause wrinkles and folds to become permanent.

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used in the eye area to reduce these fine lines. Using very fine needles, tiny amounts are injected only in the muscles that are the culprits for these wrinkles – leaving the rest of your face free to move and express as normal.

of women worry about how ageing affects their eyes, so you’re not alone.

When anti-wrinkle injections are used in this way together with dermal fillers to correct volume loss, a more youthful but still natural appearance can be achieved.

Quick, simple and in most cases painless, anti-wrinkle injections usually show initial effects after a couple of days with the full impact visible at 7 to 14 days. Effects last between three and four months and gradually wear off over time. If you have regular anti-wrinkle injections, the effects may last a little longer.

Anti Wrinkle Injections for the Upper Face

Lines on the forehead, crow’s feet and those deep furrows between the eyes (‘glabellar’ lines) are the result of repeated muscle contractions from our facial expressions. When our skin loses elasticity as well, these lines stay put, even when our face is at rest.

Naturally enough, these are areas many women would like to do something positive about, but in a way that doesn’t look ‘frozen’ and with natural-looking results.

Anti-wrinkle injections are a quick, non-surgical option for smoothing out the upper face area. Minute injections into the muscles underneath ease them into a state of relaxation. This effectively softens the appearance of lines and creates smoother looking skin.

Dermal fillers can also be used in this area, to restore the volume and moisture loss that also accompanies the passage of time. They can add volume above your eyes to achieve a less tired look and, when combined with anti-wrinkle injections, contribute to an overall rejuvenation of the upper face.

What to Expect During Treatment?

Wrinkle muscle relaxant is one of the simplest and quickest non-surgical treatment options available for patients today. The entire procedure can be performed under 10 minutes and the effects generally begin to show in about 4-6 days. Most patients will experience a bit of redness upon injection, but this typically subsides very soon afterwards. There is the possibility of a small bruise, but it can be easily covered or is usually so small it is hardly noticeable. One of the ways to avoid unnecessary bruising is to avoid the use of blood thinners, such as Vitamin E, Aspirin or Ginseng, prior to treatments.

At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine (ACM) in Melbourne Street, prior to the procedure, Dr. Targett will offer patients the option of a topical numbing cream or vibration pen. This results in patients experiencing little to no pain during the treatment.

How to Achieve Natural Looking Results?

It’s possible to achieve subtle, natural-looking results, and still look distinctly ‘like you’, by employing the full range of options that modern dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections offer.

Combining both anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers can deliver an overall face rejuvenation. These two types of products can work together to create a balanced, refreshed effect.

Dermal fillers come in a range of different consistencies, from very light and soft for delicate and mobile areas like the lips, to denser types that are used in deeper folds, and other weights in between. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, a full range allows a subtle artistry to come into play. They can ‘plump up’ small areas such as the lips and brows, and ‘re-volumise’ large areas like the cheeks and jawline.

It’s easy to focus on an individual facial feature we’re not happy with, but a great way to look your best self is to view the face in totality when considering treatments. By viewing your face as a whole, you avoid having one feature ‘over-corrected’ and looking out of proportion with the rest of your face.

The face can be split into three distinct areas – upper, mid and lower – and they actually age at different rates. The key to retaining a fresh, natural look is to create balance and harmony across all three areas throughout that process.

Your doctor can develop an individualised plan for improving your whole face, even if there’s one area you’re most concerned about. You might be surprised at the areas that they suggest treating to deliver the overall outcome you’re after.

When will I see results from cosmetic injections for wrinkles – and how long does it last?

Generally, people start to see the results within 2-3 days of their treatment, however it can take up to seven to ten days to see the final results.

The effects of anti-wrinkle injections usually last up to up to 3 to 4 months and the longevity of the effect INCREASES with continued treatments. If you have regular treatments, the effects may last longer.

How do I maintain my anti-wrinkle injection results?

In addition, regular treatment may help reduce static wrinkles (these are wrinkles that are present even when your face is at rest). Dr Targett can discuss a treatment plan for regular anti-wrinkle injections for you.

Other Medical Uses for Botulinum Toxoid?

  • Migraine Treatments
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)
  • Excessive Sweating
  • The Masseter Relaxant Method. This is a very specialised technique that reduces the jaw. Aesthetically, this non-surgical procedure creates a more attractive oval or heart-shaped face. The process is simply that the muscle relaxant injection weakens the masseter (a chewing muscle) that often adds bulk and squareness to a jaw line. By injecting muscle relaxing injection over time into this muscle, it will shrink; causing the jaw line and the face to look more refined. However, the key to success is to trust only a master injector or expert such as a Cosmetic Physician like Dr. Targett to achieve the right results and to avoid risks and complications usually caused by inexperienced injectors.
