Microdermabrasion: The Ancient Beauty Secret for A Healthy Glowy Skin

Microdermabrasion: The Ancient Beauty Secret for A Healthy Glowy Skin

It’s not vain! It is the love of self and honouring your body.

Did you know that taking care of yourself means you are acknowledging self-acceptance? Yes, it is true. According to psychology research, people who take care of themselves live a happier, longer and contented life.

Going back to ancient times, people back then have been known to abrade their skin for a smoother complexion – something we have in familiarity with – millennia years later. The concept of abrading the upper layer of the skin for skin rejuvenation began in 1500 B.C. when Egyptian physicians used a type of sandpaper to smooth scars. It was until 1905 when Dr. Ernst Kromayer, a German dermatologist, introduced a device consisting of rotating burrs attached to a dental drill designed to remove unwanted skin layers. The baby boom modern technology has eventually incorporated motorized brushes in the fabulous 50s, but in spite of its improvement, side effects including pain, scarring, and infection were apparent. Therefore, anaesthesia was necessary before the procedure and the recovery period would last weeks.

The more advanced machine was introduced in 1985 by Dr. Mattioli and Dr. Brutto in Italy, this first machine was a “closed-loop” system where the abraded skin was returned to a dirty container in the machine instead of being aerosolized. The production of microdermabrasion machines, however, only exploded in the late 1990s when the most advanced innovation and revised machines were popularized in America by Mattioli Engineering.

Today, microdermabrasion still is the best beauty secrets around the world, and to some of you, it could be the answer to their prayers because it is affordable and suitable for all skin types with no side effects, uses no chemicals and is not invasive. You might feel a minor sunburn or pinkish appearance but will go away after a few hours or after a day. The latest, most advanced and improved technique involves the process of using tiny crystals to exfoliate the skin and then drawing out debris and impurities such as clog pores using the suction. Just like its predecessor back in 1500 B.C., the treatment removes the dead and dry outer layer of the skin’s surface to reveal fresh, healthier skin underneath, hence, rejuvenating the skin’s surface, resulting in a brighter and glowy complexion.

At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine, microdermabrasion is being used to complement a variety of facial resurfacing treatments to improve the appearance of the skin by addressing skin quality, age spots, fine lines, and scarring, and promotes skin healing. These complementary treatments include chemical peeling, laser genesis, LED light therapy, and ACM facial rejuvenation packages, to name a few.

If you are experiencing severe acne, microdermabrasion will make your acne much worse. Instead, we advise you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Targett to get the right acne treatment plan in place.

For Advanced Cosmetic Medicine standalone treatment, microdermabrasion usually takes 20 minutes, and it costs $60. The number of treatments you’ll need wholly depends on your skin goals and budget. If you are going on vacation and treating yourself for a day, one treatment will leave your skin looking bright and softer. But, if you are looking for improvement of a specific skin problem such as minimizing large pores or combating blackheads on your face or chest area, you’ll need a series of treatments to see any positive effects. It is recommended to book six to 10 treatments with 7 to 14 days apart. The number and frequency of procedures vary depending on your skin’s needs and your skin care goals.

Even monthly skin maintenance using microdermabrasion will help you along the way – having a healthier, younger and glowy skin!
