Muscle Relaxant Injections
Muscle relaxant injections are a non-surgical treatment commonly used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by relaxing facial and neck muscles thereby stretching the skin above. Muscle relaxant injections may also be used to treat bruxism or teeth grinding as well as treat excessive sweating.
Muscle relaxants act as an effective wrinkle treatment for wrinkles that have already formed. These wrinkles are known as static wrinkles. Muscle relaxants work by relaxing the facial muscles which help to stretch out the skin above. When this happens the wrinkles are effectively ironed out.
Muscle relaxants are also useful in the treatment of dynamic wrinkles – the wrinkles that can be only be seen when we use facial expression. By relaxing the facial muscles we are no longer able to form facial expressions which cause the skin to wrinkle.
As discussed above, it is possible with the use of muscle relaxing injections to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles can be prevented from becoming static wrinkles and static wrinkles can be prevented form becoming deeper wrinkles.
Muscle relaxants are most effective on wrinkles that have not yet “set”. These wrinkles are termed “dynamic wrinkles”. Dynamic wrinkles may be seen only when our facial muscles form facial expressions. If you don’t use facial muscles too much which is the case when muscle relaxants are injected then the wrinkles cannot form. In essence, muscle relaxants can help to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles. This is precisely the reason younger and younger people are using muscle relaxants to help prevent the formation of static wrinkles and to maintain a youthful appearance.
Muscle relaxants act to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by stretching the skin. Whilst muscle relaxants can help reduce the appearance and wrinkles and help prevent wrinkles from forming, they cannot remove wrinkles entirely. Deeper wrinkles especially, cannot be effectively treated using muscle relaxants. For deeper wrinkles, it is best to use dermal fillers to fill the skin under the wrinkle to create more volume under the skin.
What Are Anti Wrinkle Injections?
Anti wrinkle injections also are known as muscle relaxing injections are made from a neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria). This is a natural and purified protein that is made from bacteria in a similar way that penicillin is made from a mould. The protein relaxes the muscles under the skin preventing dynamic wrinkles from forming.
How does it work?
When we use facial expressions such as laughing squinting or frowning the muscles under the skin contract and at the same time cause the skin to fold causing wrinkles. These are known as dynamic wrinkles and disappear when your muscles relax. After a while, however, the dynamic wrinkles can set and form static wrinkles that do not go away when you stop smiling. This is a bit like bending a piece of paper until the bending action eventually forms a crinkle.
neuromodulators (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) work by preventing the signals from the nerve endings reaching the muscle and causing muscle contraction. To be more precise, neuromodulators prevent the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings thus preventing contraction of the muscle cells. The muscle cells will relax and lengthen, effectively stretching the skin above and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Are Anti Wrinkle Injections Safe?
Yes, anti wrinkle treatments are very safe. They have been used for over twenty years without any known adverse effects. They are approved for use by the TGA of Australia.
Side effects can happen but are rare. Mild bruising can sometimes occur when the needle damages a vein. Occasionally drooping of the eyelids or eyebrow can occur if injections are placed to close to this area. The key is to choose an experienced doctor trained in aesthetic medicine. This way, the side effects of anti wrinkle treatments can be minimised. By having a doctor looking after you, you can rest assured that you are in good hands.
What to Expect?
At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we understand that it can be a bit daunting when you don’t know what to expect. However, with some explanation and understanding of the treatment process involved, most clients feel much more confident to undergo their first treatment.
This guide should give you some more insight into what is involved in anti wrinkle injection treatment, pre, during and post the treatment.
Prior to the treatment, Dr Targett will provide you with a consultation during which she will listen to what you wish to achieve and determine what desired look you are seeking. She will take a full medical history from you and determine if you are a suitable candidate for anti wrinkle treatments.
To help you make an informed decision and for you to decide if anti wrinkle injections are right for you Dr Targett will discuss, the treatment process, what alternatives there might be to anti wrinkle injections, any potential side affects and post treatment care.
Once you decide to proceed with anti wrinkle treatments (which will usually be scheduled on another day to give you time to consider), then a detailed personal treatment plan will be drawn up to address your desired needs and to achieve outstanding visible results.
Pre and post photos will be taken of your face for comparison and to determine the success of your treatment. Often clients forget what they looked like before their treatment and are surprised when they are shown.
During the treatment, you will be seated on a cosmetic bed in a slightly reclined position for easy access by the doctor. Your face will be cleaned with an antiseptic cleanser to help prevent any infection. The treatment area will be mapped out to achieve accuracy and the desired result.
Anti wrinkle injections are then injected into the target facial muscles to cause them to relax. Very fine needles are used for the injections, which should cause minimal discomfort. The procedure is very quick to perform. For those that feel they cannot cope with needles, a topical anaesthetic may be applied to the skin before the procedure.
After the treatment, you may notice tiny bumps at the injection sites. These should normally settle within half an hour. There is no down time for this procedure and you may return to work following the treatment.
Post treatment care includes;
Probably the most important recommendation after having anti wrinkle injections is to NOT rub the area for a few hours following the procedure. Rubbing the area would spread the product to other areas that we do not want it to go. Your doctor has placed the injections at precise locations, so please do not rub it. For the same reasons avoid facials on the day of having the procedure performed.
- Avoid alcohol consumption
- Do not apply pressure to the treated area
- Do not massage the treated area or wear glasses or hats
- Refrain from strenuous exercise
What Is a Unit of Anti Wrinkle Injection and How Many Units Do I Need?
A “unit” refers to the manufacturers measured amount of the product. Different areas of the face will require a different number of units to treat effectively. We are able to estimate from our experience how many units are required for each area of the face. Please understand that it is not an exact science and what works for one person may not work for another. We recommend returning to the clinic after two weeks so that we can review how well the treatment has worked for you.
Please note that men will require approximates 1.5 times the amount of anti wrinkle injection compared to what women need. Below are some estimates for the number of units required for each area of the face.
1) Crows feet – 6 to 12 units each side.
2) Frown (brow) lines: 15 to 25 units
3) Teeth Grinding: 20 to 35 units for each side
4) Forehead lines: 5 to 15 units
5) Bunny Lines: 2 units on each side
6) Gummy smile: 2 units each side
7) Nefertiti lift / lower facelift: 20 units in total
8) Facial/ Jaw slimming: 20 to 30 units for each side
Do Anti Wrinkle Treatments Prevent Ageing?
Anti wrinkle treatments cannot prevent ageing, however they can help to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles. Anti wrinkle treatments cannot help to prevent the loss of facial volume that we experience as we get older. Skin Needling, Factor 4 and Laser Genesis treatments are treatments that can all enhance production of collagen and elastin to maintain facial volume.
Natural looking Results
At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we pride ourselves on achieving natural looking results. The goal is to achieve a natural looking result whereby you can still use facial expressions and don’t have a stiff frozen appearance. Dr Targett has mastered the art of knowing where and how much to inject to achieve this goal.
Can Dermal Fillers and Anti Wrinkle Injections Be Used Together?
Yes. This is often referred to as a liquid facelift. By using a combination of anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, remarkable facial rejuvenation can be achieved. Often the static wrinkles are too deep for anti wrinkle injections to remove, this is where dermal fillers come into play. Ageing is associated with wrinkles as well as a loss of official volume. Dermal fillers address the loss of facial volume.
Do The Injections Hurt?
Anti wrinkle injections are almost pain-free except for the sensation of a small scratch. The needles used are very fine, so do not hurt much. For clients that are over anxious about needles, a topical anaesthetic can be used to make the procedure more tolerable.
When Will I See The Results?
Depending on the brand of anti wrinkle injection drug that you have, the time to see results will be variable. In general, results can be seen within two to three days of having anti wrinkle treatments. However, it may take up to seven to ten days in some cases. Everyone reacts to anti wrinkle treatments in different ways.
Why Do Anti Wrinkle Injections Wear Off?
After the anti wrinkle injection has been administrated, the neuromodulators (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) sit at the end of the nerve and prevent impulses from being transmitted across the nerve/ muscle junction. A neuromodulator is a protein and is broken down slowly over time by enzymes known as proteases. The time this takes will vary from person to person.
How Long Do The Effects Last?
The results should last from four to six months. Again, this varies from person to person.
How Do I Maintain The Results?
Regular treatments every three months will help ensure that the results will be lasting for you. The good thing about having regular treatments is that it can help prevent dynamic wrinkles turning into static wrinkles. It is becoming the trend now for younger people to have anti wrinkle treatments, purely to help prevent future wrinkles from forming.
Is There Any Downtime?
There is usually no downtime and you can return to normal daily activities straight away. However, we do not advise having anti wrinkle treatments prior to an important event. There is always a rare possibility of bruising or other side effects.
Are There Any Contraindications to Anti Wrinkle Injections?
- Pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
- Allergy to (Term Forbidden by TGA)
- Taking Aminoglycosides
- Allergy to human albumin
- Prior facial surgery
- Neurological disorders
What Are The Possible Side Effects?
Complications and side effects are uncommon, however, they do sometimes occur. The symptoms usually go away quickly, however, in some instances, the symptoms may last for several months.
Possible side effects include;
- Bruising, pain, swelling at the site of the injection. Usually clears after seven days.
- Headaches sometimes occur after the injections. They usually last less than 24hours and can be treated with paracetamol.
- Twitching and numbness in the treated area. Usually, last only a few days.
- Eyebrow drooping or double vision. It is temporary, lasting a few weeks only.
- Allergic reaction to the neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria). Very rare.
- Infection at the site of the injection.
How Can I Avoid Complications From Anti Wrinkle Injections?
Neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) injections need to be performed correctly in order to avoid complications. A good cosmetic doctor will start with a lower dose and increase the dose if necessary to achieve the desired result. A good cosmetic injector will have a good understanding of the anatomy of the muscles around the eye and the face as a whole. To avoid any side effects it is critical to inject just the right amount of product in the correct location. It is critical not to inject too much neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) above the eyebrow as it may migrate downward causing the eyelid to droop. This is often referred to as ptosis. To avoid ptosis the injector should only inject two centimetres away from the orbital rim. Also to avoid ptosis you should not massage the area around the eyes. It is also a good idea not to exercise straight after having anti wrinkle injections. The reason for this is to prevent the neuromodulator from migrating downward and causing ptosis.
How Much do Anti Wrinkle Injections Cost?
The charge is $6.00 per unit of the neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria). This cost includes the doctor’s consultation/ service fee.
What Happens as Anti Wrinkle Injections Begin to Wear Off?
Anti wrinkle injections will begin to wear off after four to six months. You will begin to notice that wrinkles are reappearing. They may not be as deep or as noticeable as what they once were. To keep your smooth and wrinkle free appearance all year round, you will need to have a regular “top up” every so often. By having repeat treatments you will notice the effects seem to last longer, meaning fewer injections.
