How it works
What are Muscle Relaxant Injections?
Wrinkle relaxers / Anti-wrinkle injections are a non-surgical treatment commonly used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by relaxing facial and neck muscles thereby stretching the skin above. Muscle relaxant injections may also be used to treat bruxism or teeth grinding as well as treat excessive sweating.
How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
When we use facial expressions such as laughing squinting or frowning the muscles under the skin contract and at the same time cause the skin to fold, causing wrinkles. These are known as dynamic wrinkles and disappear when your muscles relax. After a while, however, the dynamic wrinkles can set and form static wrinkles that do not go away when you stop smiling. This is a bit like bending a piece of paper until the bending action eventually forms a crinkle.
Wrinkle removing injections work by preventing the signals from the nerve endings from reaching the muscle and causing muscle contraction. To be more precise, the cosmetic injections prevent the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings thus preventing contraction of the muscle cells. The muscle cells will relax and lengthen, effectively stretching the skin above and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What are the alternatives to wrinkle relaxing injections for wrinkle reduction?
At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine, we recognise that not everybody is comfortable or feels that they are ready for anti-wrinkle injections.
A popular alternative that can help prevent wrinkles and also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles are treatments that induce the formation of new collagen. ACM are now able to provide a choice of three excellent treatment to do just that; Laser Genesis, Factor 4 and NuEra Tight. A new treatment that many may be interested in is "Profhilo". Profhilo is a highly concentrated form of hyaluronic acid that is injected beneath the skin to create an amazing overall hydrating effect.
For anyone interested in maintaining their youthful appearance, we highly recommend these treatments as a preventative skin rejuvenation technique. Many people do not realise that as they age the skin produces less and less collagen. By boosting collagen levels, we are able to help prevent the formation of wrinkles and prevent skin laxity.
How are muscle relaxing injections performed?
After you have had your consultation with the doctor and have been deemed a suitable candidate for muscle relaxant injections, the actual procedure can begin.
First, the doctor will examine your face and mark up the points where the injections will be administered. At ACM we use the AccuveinVein Light to help avoid any blood vessels which could potentially cause bruising if punctured.
Your face will then be cleaned with a disinfectant to prevent any chance of infection occurring. The actual injection process then commences and takes only a few minutes. You will not need any anaesthetic for the procedure. Very fine needles are used to administer the product into specific muscles, causing only minor discomfort.
It will take about 7 to 14 days for the full effect to kick in, so don’t panic if you think it is not working straight away. You should avoid alcohol for at least one week prior to the procedure. You should stop taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications, two weeks before the treatment. This will help reduce the chance of bruising during the treatment.
After the treatment, you should avoid rubbing the treated area, as this may spread the product to another area where it may have an undesired effect. You should stay upright for four hours after the procedure and avoid exercise for the whole day. This will also prevent the product from migrating from the intended injection site.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
The effects of Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) typically last between 3 to 6 months, although individual results can vary. After this time, the muscles gradually regain their ability to contract, and the wrinkles or lines that were temporarily smoothed out by the Botox injections will gradually reappear. Some factors that can affect how long Botox lasts include the individual's metabolism, the amount of Botox injected, and the area being treated. It's important to note that Botox should always be administered by a licensed and experienced medical professional.
When will I see results?
Depending on the brand of anti-wrinkle injections drug that you have, the time to see results will be variable. In general, results can start to be seen within two to three days of having anti-wrinkle injections. However, it may take up to 14 days in some cases to see the full results.
Everyone reacts to anti-wrinkle injections in different ways. Some people will require larger doses than others to achieve the same results. You may also find over time that you will need a higher dose. This is due to your body becoming more efficient at metabolising the anti wrinkle product.
Do anti wrinkle injections have any downtime?
Yes, there is typically some downtime associated with Botox treatments, although the extent of the downtime can vary depending on the individual and the specific treatment area.
After receiving Botox injections, some people may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising around the injection site. These side effects usually resolve within a few hours to a few days after the treatment. In some cases, patients may also experience mild headaches or flu-like symptoms for a short period following the injection.
It's also important to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours after the injection, as this can cause the Botox to spread to unintended areas and potentially result in unwanted side effects.
In terms of the results of the treatment, it typically takes a few days to a week for the full effects of the Botox to become apparent. The effects usually last for several months, after which time a follow-up treatment may be necessary to maintain the results.
What preparation if required for anti wrinkle injections?
If you are planning to get Botox injections, here are some general preparations you can follow:
- Consultation: Schedule a consultation with a qualified and licensed healthcare professional who is experienced in performing Botox injections. They will evaluate your medical history, examine your skin, and discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure.
- Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they may interact with the treatment. You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or muscle relaxants, several days before the procedure.
- Avoid alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before the treatment, as it can increase the risk of bruising.
- Avoid blood thinners: Avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for a few days before the treatment, as they can increase the risk of bruising.
- Skincare: Avoid using any skincare products that contain retinoids or glycolic acid for a few days before the treatment, as they can increase skin sensitivity.
- Numbing cream: If you are concerned about pain during the injection, your healthcare provider may offer a numbing cream to be applied before the treatment.
It's essential to follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions before the procedure to ensure the best possible results and minimize any risks.
What are the post care instructions after receiving anti wrinkle injections?
After receiving Botox injections, it's important to follow these post-care instructions to ensure the best results:
- Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for at least 24 hours.
- Refrain from strenuous exercise or physical activity for 24 hours after treatment.
- Avoid lying down or bending over for at least four hours after the procedure.

Yes, Botox can be an effective wrinkle treatment, particularly for dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions, such as frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead wrinkles. Botox is a brand name for a purified form of botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes muscles.
When injected into the facial muscles responsible for causing wrinkles, Botox can relax those muscles, which smooths out the wrinkles in the overlying skin. The effects of Botox usually last for three to six months, and then the treatment must be repeated to maintain the results.
It is important to note that Botox is not effective for all types of wrinkles, such as those caused by sun damage or loss of skin elasticity due to aging. Other cosmetic treatments, such as dermal fillers or laser resurfacing, may be more appropriate for these types of wrinkles.
Before considering Botox or any cosmetic treatment, it is important to consult with a qualified and experienced healthcare professional to determine the best course of action based on your individual needs and goals.
Botox can be an effective treatment for certain types of wrinkles, but it may not be able to smooth all wrinkles.
Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause certain types of wrinkles, such as crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles. By relaxing the muscles, Botox can reduce the appearance of these wrinkles, making the skin appear smoother.
However, Botox may not be as effective for wrinkles caused by other factors, such as sun damage, loss of skin elasticity, or gravity. These types of wrinkles may require other treatments, such as dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, or facelift surgery.
It's also worth noting that Botox is not a permanent solution for wrinkles, and its effects typically last for a few months before additional treatments are needed to maintain the results.
Muscle relaxants/ Anti-wrinkle are most effective on wrinkles that have not yet “set”. These wrinkles are termed “dynamic wrinkles”. Dynamic wrinkles may be seen only when our facial muscles form facial expressions. If you don’t use facial muscles too much which is the case when muscle relaxants are injected then the wrinkles cannot form.
In essence, muscle relaxants can help to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles. This is precisely the reason younger and younger people are using muscle relaxants to help prevent the formation of static wrinkles and to maintain a youthful appearance.
Muscle relaxants (aka botox Adelaide) act to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by stretching the skin. Whilst muscle relaxants can help reduce the appearance and wrinkles and help prevent wrinkles from forming, they cannot remove wrinkles entirely. Deeper wrinkles especially, cannot be effectively treated using muscle relaxants. For deeper wrinkles, it is best to use dermal fillers to fill the skin under the wrinkle to create more volume under the skin.
Botox is a brand name for a type of botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The active ingredient in Botox is a highly purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which is produced through a complex process involving bacterial fermentation, purification, and sterilization.
The purified botulinum toxin is then mixed with a saline solution and injected into specific muscles in order to temporarily paralyze them, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is a prescription medication and should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional.
Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin that is used for cosmetic and medical purposes. When administered by a licensed healthcare professional such as Dr Rahma Targett, in the appropriate dosage and manner, Botox is generally considered safe.
However, like any medical procedure or treatment, there are potential risks and side effects associated with Botox injections. These can include allergic reactions, headaches, bruising, temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, and in rare cases, difficulty breathing or swallowing.
It's important to only receive Botox injections from a licensed and experienced healthcare professional who is trained in administering the treatment safely. You should also discuss any medical conditions or medications you are taking with your healthcare provider before receiving Botox, as they may affect your suitability for the treatment.
In summary, while Botox is generally considered safe when administered by a licensed healthcare professional, it's important to weigh the potential risks and benefits before deciding to undergo the treatment. By having Dr Targett looking after you, you can rest assured that you are in good hands.
At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we understand that it can be a bit daunting when you don’t know what to expect. However, with some explanation and understanding of the treatment process involved, most clients feel much more confident to undergo their first treatment.
This guide should give you some more insight into what is involved in anti wrinkle injection treatment, pre, during and post the treatment.
Pre-Treatment Process
Prior to the treatment, Dr Targett will provide you with a consultation during which she will listen to what you wish to achieve and determine what desired look you are seeking. She will take a full medical history from you and determine if you are a suitable candidate for anti wrinkle treatments.
To help you make an informed decision and for you to decide if anti wrinkle injections are right for you Dr Targett will discuss, the treatment process, what alternatives there might be to anti wrinkle injections, any potential side affects and post treatment care.
Once you decide to proceed with anti wrinkle treatments then a detailed personal treatment plan will be drawn up to address your desired needs and to achieve outstanding visible results.
Pre and post photos will be taken of your face for comparison and to determine the success of your treatment. Often clients forget what they looked like before their treatment and are surprised when they are shown.
During Treatment
During the treatment, you will be seated on a cosmetic bed in a slightly reclined position for easy access. Your face will be cleaned with an antiseptic cleanser to help prevent any infection. The treatment area will then be mapped out to achieve accuracy and the desired result.
Anti wrinkle injections are then injected into the target facial muscles to cause them to relax. Very fine needles are used for the injections, which should cause minimal discomfort. The procedure is very quick to perform. For those that feel they cannot cope with needles, a topical anaesthetic may be applied to the skin before the procedure (please make sure you ask for this prior to your appointment).
Post-treatment process
After the treatment, you may notice tiny bumps at the injection sites. These should normally settle within half an hour. There is no down time for this procedure and you may return to work following the treatment.
Post treatment care includes;
Probably the most important recommendation after having anti wrinkle injections is to NOT rub the area for a few hours following the procedure. Rubbing the area would spread the product to other areas that we do not want it to go. Your doctor has placed the injections at precise locations, so please do not rub it. For the same reasons avoid facials on the day of having the procedure performed.
- Avoid alcohol consumption
- Do not apply pressure to the treated area
- Do not massage the treated area or wear glasses or hats
- Refrain from strenuous exercise
A “unit” refers to the manufacturers measured amount of the product. Different areas of the face will require a different number of units to treat effectively. We are able to estimate from our experience how many units are required for each area of the face. Please understand that it is not an exact science and what works for one person may not work for another. We recommend returning to the clinic after two weeks so that we can review how well the treatment has worked for you.
Please note that men will require approximates 1.5 times the amount of anti wrinkle injection compared to what women need. Below are some estimates for the number of units required for each area of the face.
- Crows feet – 6 to 12 units each side.
- Frown (brow) lines: 15 to 25 units
- Teeth Grinding: 20 to 35 units for each side
- Forehead lines: 5 to 15 units
- Bunny Lines: 2 units on each side
- Gummy smile: 2 units each side
- Nefertiti lift / lower facelift: 20 units in total
- Facial/ Jaw slimming: 20 to 30 units for each side
Botox can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, which are commonly associated with aging. However, Botox does not prevent the aging process itself.
Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, which helps to relax them and reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. This effect is temporary and typically lasts for a few months, after which the treatment needs to be repeated to maintain the results.
While Botox can help to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, it does not stop the natural aging process that causes skin to lose elasticity and collagen over time. To help slow down the aging process, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive sun exposure.
Skin Needling, Factor 4, and Laser Genesis treatments, however, can all enhance production of collagen and elastin to maintain facial volume.
Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. When administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner, Botox can provide natural-looking results.
The key to achieving natural results with Botox is to use the right amount and inject it in the correct areas. Botox should be used conservatively, so that the patient still has some movement and expression in their face, rather than a frozen or unnatural appearance.
It's important to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner who has a good understanding of facial anatomy and knows how to achieve natural-looking results with Botox. A skilled practitioner can assess your unique facial structure and recommend a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results while maintaining a natural appearance.
The goal is to achieve a natural looking result whereby you can still use facial expressions and don’t have a stiff frozen appearance. Dr Targett has mastered the art of knowing where and how much to inject to achieve this goal.
Yes. This is often referred to as a liquid facelift. By using a combination of anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, remarkable facial rejuvenation can be achieved. Often the static wrinkles are too deep for anti wrinkle injections to remove, this is where dermal fillers come into play. Ageing is associated with wrinkles as well as a loss of official volume. Dermal fillers address the loss of facial volume.
Botox injections can be slightly uncomfortable, but they are typically not considered painful. The needle used for Botox injections is very fine, so most people experience only a slight pinching sensation as the needle enters the skin. However, everyone's pain tolerance is different, so some people may experience more discomfort than others.
Additionally, the location of the injection can also impact the level of discomfort. Injections in more sensitive areas, such as around the lips or eyes, may be more uncomfortable than injections in other areas. However, your doctor or nurse injector can use various techniques to minimize discomfort, such as numbing cream or ice packs.
It's important to note that any discomfort from the injection is usually brief and should subside quickly. If you are concerned about the pain associated with Botox injections, you can discuss your options with your healthcare provider.
Depending on the brand of anti wrinkle injection drug that you have, the time to see results will be variable.
The time it takes to see results from Botox can vary depending on several factors, including the individual's metabolism, the area being treated, and the severity of the wrinkles.
In general, most people will begin to see some improvement within 2-3 days after the injection, but it can take up to 1-2 weeks to see the full effects. The results typically last for 3-4 months, after which you may need additional injections to maintain the results.
It's important to note that individual results may vary, and it's best to discuss your expectations and concerns with a qualified healthcare professional who can give you a better idea of what to expect based on your individual circumstances.
Botox is a type of neurotoxin that is used to temporarily paralyze muscles in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or treat certain medical conditions. The effects of Botox typically last for several months, but eventually wear off and the treated muscles regain their function.
The reason why Botox wears off is because the body gradually breaks down the toxin over time. Botox works by blocking the signals that are sent between nerves and muscles, which temporarily paralyzes the muscle and prevents it from contracting. However, the body has natural mechanisms for breaking down and eliminating foreign substances like Botox.
As the body breaks down the Botox, the muscle gradually regains its function and the wrinkles or other conditions that were treated with Botox may begin to reappear. The exact length of time that Botox lasts can vary depending on factors such as the amount of Botox used, the location of the treatment, and the individual's metabolism and physiology.
Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The effects of Botox typically begin to appear within a few days of the injection and can last for several months.
The length of time that Botox lasts can vary depending on several factors. For example, larger doses of Botox or injections in areas with stronger muscles may last longer than smaller doses or injections in weaker muscles. Additionally, individual differences in metabolism, skin type, and other factors can also affect how long Botox lasts.
It's also important to note that the effects of Botox are not permanent, and repeat injections are usually necessary to maintain the desired results. However, over time, some individuals may require fewer injections as the muscles become weaker and the effects of Botox last longer. It's always best to discuss the expected duration of Botox injections with your healthcare provider, as they can provide more personalized information based on your individual situation.
Regular treatments every three months will help ensure that the results will be lasting for you. The good thing about having regular treatments is that it can help prevent dynamic wrinkles turning into static wrinkles. It is becoming the trend now for younger people to have anti wrinkle treatments, purely to help prevent future wrinkles from forming.
While Botox is generally safe, there are certain contraindications to its use, which include:
- Allergy to botulinum toxin: Individuals who have a known allergy to botulinum toxin or any of the other ingredients in Botox should not use this medication.
- Neuromuscular disorders: People with certain neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, should avoid Botox injections as it can worsen their condition.
- Infection at the injection site: If there is an active infection at the site of the injection, Botox treatment should be delayed until the infection has cleared up.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Botox use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended as there is limited data on its safety during these periods.
- Medications: Some medications may interact with Botox, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before undergoing treatment.
- Bleeding disorders: People with bleeding disorders or who are taking blood thinning medications may have an increased risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
- Age: Botox is not recommended for individuals under the age of 18.
It is important to discuss your medical history and any current health conditions with your healthcare provider before undergoing Botox treatment. They will be able to determine if Botox is safe and appropriate for you.
Like any medication, it can have side effects. Some common side effects of Botox include:
- Headache: Many people experience headaches after receiving Botox injections.
- Bruising: Bruising is a common side effect of Botox injections, especially around the injection site.
- Muscle weakness: Botox injections can cause temporary muscle weakness in the area that was treated.
- Flu-like symptoms: Some people may experience flu-like symptoms after receiving Botox injections, such as nausea and fatigue.
- Eye drooping: In rare cases, Botox injections can cause the eyelids to droop or the eyes to appear asymmetrical.
- Allergic reaction: Some people may have an allergic reaction to Botox, which can cause itching, rash, and difficulty breathing.
- Infection at the site of the injection.
It's important to note that these side effects are typically mild and temporary. However, if you experience any unusual symptoms after receiving Botox injections, it's important to contact your healthcare provider right away.
Neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) injections need to be performed correctly in order to avoid complications. A good cosmetic doctor will start with a lower dose and increase the dose if necessary to achieve the desired result. A good cosmetic injector will have a good understanding of the anatomy of the muscles around the eye and the face as a whole. To avoid any side effects it is critical to inject just the right amount of product in the correct location.
It is critical not to inject too much neuromodulator (derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria) above the eyebrow as it may migrate downward causing the eyelid to droop. This is often referred to as ptosis. To avoid ptosis the injector should only inject two centimetres away from the orbital rim. Also to avoid ptosis you should not massage the area around the eyes. It is also a good idea not to exercise straight after having anti wrinkle injections. The reason for this is to prevent the neuromodulator from migrating downward and causing ptosis.
As the effects of Botox wear off, typically after three to six months, the muscle activity gradually returns to its normal state. This means that the wrinkles and fine lines that were previously diminished by the Botox injections will gradually reappear.
As the Botox wears off, some people may notice a gradual return of muscle movement and wrinkles. Others may notice a more sudden return of muscle activity. It is important to note that the effects of Botox are temporary and regular injections may be necessary to maintain the desired cosmetic effect.
