DESCRIPTION

Hyperhidrosis Treatment- Adelaide

Excess sweating or hyperhidrosis can be unpleasant, unsightly and annoying. However, it is normal for the body to sweat to a certain extent.

Sweating is key to the mechanisms your body uses to maintain the right temperature. When sweat evaporates, it cools your skin. If you get hot, your body will compensate by sweating more, so that the rate of cooling is intensified.

However, some people do sweat more than others. This could be due to a number of reasons:

  • Potential underlying medical condition e.g. thyroid, diabetes
  • Age e.g. puberty, menopause
  • Exertion – a more active lifestyle teaches the body to be more efficient, so sweating starts earlier
  • Caffeine intake, spicy food
  • Genetics
  • Stress

However, some people have ‘excessive sweating’, where the amount of sweat produced is above normal and interferes with daily life. This is a medical condition called “hyperhidrosis.” It is a condition that sufferers often live with for years, dealing on a daily basis with the embarrassment or lack of confidence which results from having uncontrollably damp armpits.

How it works

How do you treat excessive sweating / hyperhidrosis?

This treatment uses muscle relaxant injections to stop signals travelling between nerves and sweat glands. By blocking the neurotransmitter, sweat glands can no longer be overstimulated. As a result, the activity of the sweat glands is decreased. This treatment offers a long-term reduction in excessive sweating, enabling patients to feel more confident in social and professional situations.

Many patients assume that muscle relaxants are only used to treat cosmetic concerns such as laugh lines. However, these products also have other uses. Injections of muscle relaxant in this treatment cause no changes in the appearance of the area. The injections are focused only on the function of the glands.

Who is suitable to have anti sweating treatment?

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, affects an estimated 1% of the population. If you have experienced excessive sweating and are looking for a long-term solution, muscle relaxant treatments may be right for you. Most candidates have already tried strong antiperspirants, but have not found them satisfactory. If nothing has worked to control your sweating, you may want to try muscle relaxant treatments. They are appropriate for most adult men and women who are in good overall health.

What should I expect from Hyperhidrosis Treatament?

The treatment is performed in our doctor’s office and takes about 40 minutes. A thin needle is used to inject the muscle relaxant just underneath the skin. Multiple injections are placed throughout the armpits in order to target all the sweat glands.

There is no recovery time necessary, and patients can return home or work immediately after the injection process. There are no specific aftercare instructions and no downtime.

Within about a week, the muscle relaxant will have taken full effect, blocking signals to the sweat glands. You should see a noticeable reduction in sweat by this time. Patients should note that it is common to experience a substantial reduction, rather than complete elimination, of sweating.

The results of this treatment last for 6-8 months. Many patients return for repeat injections in order to maintain its effects.

What should I expect after the treatment?

There is virtually no downtime following the procedure, although it is not unusual to experience mild tenderness and in some cases light bruising in the injected areas following treatment. These effects generally subside shortly after. It is not uncommon for a top-up treatment to be performed two to four weeks following the initial treatment as this ensures the accuracy and longevity of the desired effects.

What are the risks / complications from hyperhidrosis treatment?

Common side effects of muscle relaxant treatments for excessive sweating include redness, swelling, tenderness, and bruising in the armpits. They dissipate in under a week. Avoid rubbing or touching the underarms for 12 hours following the injections, as this can make the muscle relaxant migrate to nearby areas and cause unintended muscle weakness. Serious complications are rare following muscle relaxant injections but may include infection or long-term numbness of the muscle in the treated area.
