At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine we offer muscle relaxing injections to reduce jaw size and excessive teeth grinding (Bruxism). The treatment is carried out by our highly experienced Cosmetic Medicine Specialist – Dr Targett. An excessive wide jaw that can create a square-shaped lower face, is a largely common problem. While the square jaw may be desirable in men, it is not a feminine appearance. In the past, surgery was the only remedy but now the non-surgical jaw slimming reduction procedure using muscle relaxing injections is an excellent alternative solution.
If you place your hands at the angle of your jaw as you clench your teeth down, you will feel the bulging and hardness of a muscle. This muscle, called the Masseter muscle, is often a primary cause of excessive jaw width and teeth grinding. Muscle relaxing injections weaken the corner part of the muscle, hence improve teeth grinding. How it works
How Do Muscle Relaxing Injections Reduce The Size of The Jaw?
Muscle relaxants weaken the injected muscle over time, which leads in turn to a reduction in the overall size. Our specialist doctor will focus the treatment precisely where the three heads of the muscle overlap (for maximal effect) and at the deep and superficial part of the muscle, which happens to correspond with where the muscle inserts into the bone. By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce overtime giving longer-lasting results without compromise to the strength of the bone. What Does a Jaw Slimming Procedure Involve?
Prior the treatment:
Dr Targett will review your medical history to ensure you are suitable for the treatment, medically examine the jaw muscle to determine the injection sites and explain the procedure, aftercare, all possible complications and how to avoid prior the treatment
The treatment:
There is only one to two injections of muscle relaxing injection per side of the jaw required during the procedure
Post treatment care:
Patients must not rub or massage the treated area for 4 hours after the injection in order to prevent the spreading of the medication. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided during your visit by our Clinic Coordinator
Who is a Good Candidate to Have a Jaw Slimming Procedure?
The most important criteria to decide if you are a good candidate for a jaw slimming procedure is the thickness of your masseter muscle (jaw muscle). The relative thickness of the masseter can be easily determined by biting down hard and feeling the outer jawline. If the muscle appears to be almost rock hard and enlarged in appearance when you clench your teeth, you may be a good candidate to have this procedure done.
When Will I See Results And How Long Will The Results Last?
Generally, it will take about 6 weeks before you see the difference and will last typically between 6 months to a year and a half. However, at the end of the first week, you may notice that your jawline feels a lot softer when you bite down and feel it. It is recommended to evaluate the result at 3 months following the first injection in order to evaluate the full effect and see if you need further treatment. You may need up to 3 treatments in total to achieve maximum result depending upon your jaw muscle size. Top up treatments every 6-12 months are recommended to maintain the result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.

Most patients do not have this problem as only corner part of the muscle will be relaxed, not all parts of the muscle. However, you may experience some tiring after chewing for a while, this phenomenon is only temporary and will go away in a short period of time, commonly within a week.
The jaw slimming procedure is painless. The specialist doctor has a specialised method of injection that virtually eliminates all discomfort without the need for an anaesthetic.
The treatment will only take 10 minutes to administer the injections, and patients may continue the rest of their day afterwards. However, we recommend that patients allow time beforehand and afterwards to discuss concerns and aftercare.
Patients may be advised to stop taking fish or krill oil and avoid chemical peels for one week before the treatment. At your consultation with Dr Targett, make sure you disclose any of the following:
- Are regularly taking blood-thinning medications
- Have any allergies
- Have a history of cold sores
- Have sunburn present in the treatment area
- Have a history or current flare-up of psoriasis or eczema
- Are due to fly/travel within two weeks of the treatment
- Are currently taking antibiotics
This will ensure that patients receive the best possible outcome of their treatment and minimise the occurrence of bruising or swelling.
For optimal results and healing, we recommend that patients follow their aftercare plan, which may include:
- Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Do not lie down on the treated area or apply pressure for four hours post-treatment
- Avoid touching or massaging the injection sites and treatment area unless advised
- Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure for roughly one week
Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe allergies, muscular disorders, or have a history of poor scarring may not be suitable for a jaw slimming treatment.
