DESCRIPTION

Lip Lines Treatment - Adelaide

Smoker’s or lipstick lines are small lines that etch the lips and may extend vertically from the lips. They are often first noticed when lipstick starts to ‘bleed’ out of the vermilion border (the border between the lip and adjacent skin) into the vertical fine lines around the mouth. They are more prevalent on the upper lips.

Smoker’s lines occur as we grow older, and the lip naturally starts to lose its volume, along with repetitive bunching of the tissue from muscular activity.

Smoking does not necessarily cause smoker’s lines; physiological aging, in general, causes lines, folds, and wrinkles in the lower face area, or anything below the eyes, to form.

As well as natural ageing, the effects of the sun can also develop and increase the lines around the lips. These lines are more likely to form in smokers due to the repeated pursing of the lips to draw from the cigarette. Smoking also breaks down the production of collagen, which in turn increases the appearance of wrinkles and causes the skin to thin.

What are smokers lines?

Small lines that etch the lips and may extend vertically from the lips are commonly referred to as lipstick lines or smoker’s lines. Lip lines are often first noticed when lipstick starts to ‘bleed’ out of the vermilion border (the border between the lip and adjacent skin) into the vertical fine lines around the mouth. They are more prevalent on the upper lips.

What causes smokers lines?

Smoker’s lines/lip lines occur as we grow older and the lip naturally starts to lose its volume, along with repetitive bunching of the tissue from muscular activity.

What are the treatment options for smokers lines.

Treatment options for smoker's lines, also known as lipstick lines, encompass a variety of approaches to improve their appearance. Topical treatments, available over-the-counter or through prescriptions, incorporate retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, or peptides to stimulate collagen production and promote skin renewal, thus reducing fine lines around the lips. Dermatologists often recommend medical-grade skincare products like serums or creams containing hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and peptides to deeply hydrate the skin, enhance elasticity, and diminish the visibility of lip lines.

Mild chemical peels are another option, effectively exfoliating the skin, stimulating cell turnover, and refining the texture of the lips and surrounding areas. This process aids in minimizing the appearance of fine lines. Microdermabrasion, a non-invasive procedure, involves the use of a specialized device to exfoliate the outer skin layer, resulting in smoother skin texture and reduced fine lines.

Laser therapy, including fractional laser resurfacing or CO2 laser therapy, targets and diminishes lip lines by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin tightening, ultimately reducing the appearance of these lines.
