Sometimes it is necessary to dissolve dermal fillers. We often get clients coming to us from other clinics that are not happy with their facial fillers. Perhaps the dermal filler is overfilled, incorrectly placed or lumpy in appearance. One of the good things about hyaluronic acid fillers is that not only is it a naturally occurring substance in the body, but it is also possible to dissolve it in the event of things not going to plan. The HA used in dermal fillers is cross-linked and left to its own devices in the body will take between three months to a year to break down. But with the help of an enzyme called hyaluronidase, dermal fillers can be dissolved almost immediately.

Because Hyaluronidase is a natural compound found in the body, like some non-permanent dermal fillers, this treatment is relatively safe for patients. The dissolving solution is administered with the same technique as dermal fillers via injection into the relevant areas. This means some minor bruising, swelling, or redness may occur, comparable to normal post-treatment reactions when injecting dermal filler.
Immediate, fast results
The Hyaluronidase solution immediately dissolves the dermal fillers, and patients usually notice an immediate difference. Patients continue to see the fillers dissipate over the next 48 hours after treatment. The final results occur roughly two weeks after the session as individuals revert to their natural appearance.

Unfortunately one of the risks of getting dermal fillers is the risk of blood vessel blockage, due to either injection within the blood vessel or pressure outside the blood vessel causing collapse. What Is Hyaluronidase
Hyaluronidase is also a natural substance found in the body. Hyaluronidases are in fact enzymes that help to break down hyaluronic acid. Interestingly hyaluronidase is found in high concentration in sperm and is made available commercially from ovine and bovine testicular tissue.
To remove dermal filler from the body, hyaluronidase can be injected into the site to dissolve the hyaluronic acid from the filler.
The hyaluronidase will also dissolve the body’s natural hyaluronic acid in the region. Because hyaluronic acid turns over rapidly in the body, this will come back very quickly.
Hyaluronidase treatment may be contraindicated in those people that allergic to wasp or bee sting.
Why do people wish to dissolve their dermal fillers?
Often people are not satisfied with the look of their dermal fillers, so they decide to get it reversed or dissolved.
Other times there may be a complication caused by the dermal fillers that requires for the filler to be dissolved. Not all practitioners perform dermal filler dissolving. It is always a good idea to ask your practitioner if they do this before the procedure is performed. This will prevent delays in you being referred to a practitioner that performs this procedure, if it is required.
What should be expected with the treatment?
At Advanced Cosmetic Medicine, you will require an initial consultation with Dr Targett before undergoing the treatment to dissolve your fillers, especially if you did not receive your initial dermal filler treatment with us. You will need to disclose what type of product you received if you underwent treatment at a different clinic, as thick semi-permanent and permanent fillers cannot be
dissolved.
The chosen areas you wish to dissolve will be assessed to understand where the filler is, how much dermal filler is present, and select the injection sites. An ultrasound may be needed to determine the exact location if we cannot detect the dermal filler by eyesight and feel. This can be the case for patients undergoing treatment due to the migration of the filler. If you have a history of allergic reactions to bee stings or wasp stings, we may need to do an allergy patch test of Hyaluronidase before going ahead with the treatment. In rare cases, allergic reactions can occur, and conducting an allergy test beforehand can help mitigate this risk.
The Hyaluronidase solution is injected into the chosen sites and will begin working immediately to break down and soften the filler during your treatment. A topical numbing cream may be applied before injections to minimise discomfort. Dermal fillers can differ for every individual, depending on the injection techniques and if the fillers have built up over time. Small, superficial lumps on the lip area may quickly dissolve, but larger nodules or widespread areas will break down in sections and may take longer. The process itself is hard to predict, and some patients may require multiple sessions over some time to monitor the body’s response as it dissolves the dermal fillers.
There may be bruising and swelling around the injection sites for 24-48 hours after your treatment. You will not see a noticeable difference in your appearance until the swelling and bruising subside. Larger, more extensive treatment areas may result in residual skin laxity but are usually preferable to patients than their pre-treatment appearance. Patients may also experience redness, pain, itching, and tenderness around the injection sites but usually resolve a few days after treatment.

Hyaluronidase can only dissolve dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid (HA), the most popular and widely used fillers for patients, because they can be removed at any time. Other semi-permanent or permanent fillers cannot be dissolved. They can only be removed via surgery, so patients should carefully consider the pros and cons of different filler types before going ahead with treatment.
Since dissolving dermal filler is not an exact science, the solution may target your body’s natural HA instead of the injected HA. This will not cause volume loss, as hyaluronic acid is not known for being volumising. However, HA is responsible for hydration levels in the skin, and therefore, you may experience dehydration and dryness.
Most patients do not find the treatment uncomfortable, but some may experience minor discomfort during the treatment. Therefore, a topical numbing cream can be applied before the injection to mitigate this feeling.
It is difficult to determine the exact amount of dissolving solution required to dissipate the unwanted filler present in chosen areas. We caution patients that all dermal filler present in the injected areas, such as the upper lip or cheek, will be affected by the Hyaluronidase. However, only the filler present in the targeted area will be dissolved and not target other areas. It is possible to manipulate and shape small amounts of unwanted filler, but this varies for every patient. A consultation with Dr Targett will be required to assess the extent of the undesirable fillers.
