Freckles are cute, right? That’s what everybody always says. But what if you’re one of the freckled folk who would prefer it if they’d just…vanish?

Freckles are small, circular spots on the skin that are darker – sometimes much darker – than the surrounding skin. Most are light to dark brown in colour, but they can range anywhere from yellow to almost black.

You may have heard freckles referred to as ‘kisses from the sun’, and it’s true that exposure to sunlight can bring them out. This is because of the sun reacting with melanin in the skin. Freckles can also be inherited, and if your parents or siblings are freckled it’s likely you will be too.

There are actually two different types of freckle – ephelides and lentigines. Ephilides freckles only emerge during the summer months when there’s lots of sunlight on the skin. Usually, light brown, they fade in winter.

In contrast, lentigine freckles are usually much darker in colour. They’re also permanent and aren’t affected by exposure to sunlight. It’s these freckles that people most often want to remove – whereas ephelides freckles are seen as attractive, the darker ones are often seen as undesirable for those who have them.

How Laser freckle Removal Can Help

Excel V laser treatment can be highly effective in eliminating freckles and leaving the skin clear. In our experience, it’s the best option for those who are wishing their freckles away.

The Excel V laser is designed to concentrate on powerful photomechanical energy on the areas of skin you wish to treat. Each Excel V pulse is distributed into patterns of high-energy, focused regions embedded in a lower-fluence background. The laser energy is absorbed by the freckles, which destroys the melanin, removing the freckle.

How It Work?

The treatment works because high energy levels in the laser create a photo-acoustic effect on the melanin in the freckles, shattering the pigment particles and allowing them to be more easily absorbed and removed by the body. You’ll see results within 48 hours and, over time, your freckles will either completely disappear or fade significantly. Treatments will last as little as 15-30 minutes.

What To Expect From Your Treatment

With Excel V freckle laser removal treatments, the cutting edge technology involved means its virtually pain-free and has the fastest recovery time of any treatment on the market, making it increasingly popular.

Immediately after your treatment, you may notice that your skin is a little red, but this should start to fade within just a few hours. Over the next few days, the pigmentation from your freckles will start to rise to the surface of your skin and be shed like normal dead skin.

Every person needs a different number of treatments, so ask at your consultation how many we think you might need. The darker the freckles, the more treatments required. As the recovery time is so fast, you can be treated as often as once a month.

How long each individual treatment takes depends on the size of the area being treated – naturally, larger areas will take longer than smaller ones but we’ll be able to give you a more specific idea at your initial consultation.

There’s no downtime and you won’t need any time off work – in fact, you can go back to your normal day right away! You should avoid sun exposure both before and after your treatment and use a high factor SPF if you do need to go out in sunny weather.

What Other Treatments Can Treat Freckles?

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel works by using a chemical solution that exfoliates the outer layer of skin. To remove freckles, a moderate strength peel is used that contains trichloroacetic acid or glycolic acid. The acid penetrates to the skins middle layers. Once damaged the outer layer of skin is removed and new skin is generated.
The side effects of chemical peels are:

  • Peeling
  • Redness
  • Stinging
  • Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Crusting

A moderate skin peel may take up to two weeks to heal.  Dr Targett will provide you with aftercare instructions following your procedure.

Topical Treatments

Bleaching or fading creams may be used to help fade freckles.  These products usually contain hydroquinone and can be purchased over the counter. For higher concentrations, you will need a prescription.  You will need to apply these products over a period of months to be effective.  You will also need to avoid sun exposure and use sun protection from the sun.

Retinoids can also be used in conjunction with bleaching cream to help fade freckles over a period of time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Possible To Remove Freckles?

Yes, it is possible to remove freckles using ExcelV Laser 532nm treatment. After laser treatment, the freckle will get darker, scab and then peel off after about a week.  Usually, two or more treatments will be needed for complete removal.  Treatments are spaced at about four weeks apart.

Are Freckles Permanent?

Freckles often go away on their own. Some freckles will stay around for years to come. Freckles seem to most prominent in the summer and tend to fade during the winter months.  Freckles that are hereditary often diminish with age.

Depending on how you feel about having freckles, treatment is not a necessity.  Often people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons.

Are Freckles Dangerous?

Freckles are normally harmless collections of melanin. Be aware though that 75% of melanomas occur as new spots in normal-looking skin.  If you think a freckle looks suspicious or is changing over time, have it checked out by your doctor.
