DESCRIPTION

Mole Removal Adelaide

Moles (medically referred to as “nevi”) are small pigmented lesions on the skin. Moles are present at birth, while some can present later on in life. Moles come in all shapes and sizes and can be brown, red, black or skin colour.

Many people often refer to moles as “beauty marks” and others find them unsightly and want them removed. The number, size and type of moles vary from individual to individual, since every one of us is different.

Almost everyone has a few moles, and some people develop hundreds of moles. People with light skin have a propensity to develop more moles than patients with darker skin type.

The good news is that mole removal is an option and can be performed with minimal scarring.

Dr Targett has vast experience in the removal of moles as well as many other types of skin lesion removal.

The Benefits

1)

The most beneficial factor of mole removal is safeguarding your health. Mole removal decreases the chance of skin cancer. Suspicious moles are removed and examined to determine whether it is cancerous and is a preventative measure in detecting precancerous moles.

2)

Mole removal can enhance your self-esteem and boost your confidence. Some patients may have benign moles in areas that are difficult to hide, and most of the time, they can’t be covered by makeup. Removal of these benign moles can restore a more desired appearance.

3)

It can improve your quality of life. Sometimes larger moles can irritate the skin, become infected, cause discomfort, and even inhibit shaving. Removing the mole will eliminate these issues and adverse effects on their life, creating a happier, healthier self.

Why is it important to get your moles checked by a skin specialist?

While some moles are precancerous, most are benign. But it is very important to know that some moles can develop into a skin cancer called melanoma. This can occur near or inside an existing mole.

Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer and people with many moles tend to have an increased risk of skin cancer. Around 20-30% of Melanomas are found in existing moles while 70-80% arise on apparently normal skin.

Mole removal should only be performed by a doctor that is qualified in skin cancer.

How can I tell if a mole might be cancerous?

Dermatology utilises an “ABCDE” model to determine whether a mole may be cancerous or not. Moles can change over time, and therefore, regular check-ups are essential to monitoring moles for signs of cancer. Your doctor will take photos of the moles and compare them when you have your next appointment at regular appointments.

The “ABCDE” model is as follows:

  • Asymmetry

The mole appears different in one section, either in shape, colour, or appearance from the rest of the mole.

  • Border

Normal moles tend to have a clear border in a regular shape. Moles that have irregular-shaped edges or fade into the skin and are undefined can cause concern.

  • Colour

Moles should not generally be different colours or shades of the same colour. This can be a noticeable sign that something is not right.

  • Diameter

Moles that grow to a size of 6mm or more significant can be a serious cause for concern.

  • Evolving

A mole that changes over time and evolves in shape, colour, or size could indicate that the mole is precancerous or cancerous.

What methods of mole removal are there?

Advanced Cosmetic Medicine offers four methods of mole removal: laser, shaving, excision and curettage.

During your consultation, Dr Targett will examine your moles before deciding on the best method to use.

The methods of mole removal we offer include:

  • Laser mole removal
  • Shave Removal
  • Excision
  • Punch biopsy

What can I expect at a consultation?

At your consultation with Dr Targett, she will thoroughly examine any moles you may be concerned about or present on your body, checking to see if any fit the “ABCDE” criteria. If there is a mole that looks concerning, a biopsy of the mole will be required to check if the cells in the mole are cancerous. This will only take a few minutes and involves shaving the surface of the mole and surrounding skin with a sharp scalpel. A local anaesthetic will be applied to the area before this, and stitches may be required afterwards. Although most of the mole may have been removed, some cells may remain, and if the biopsy comes back with a positive cancer result, more tissue may need to be removed to ensure the cancer cells are eliminated.

If the mole removal is for cosmetic reasons only and is confirmed benign, then various methods can be used to remove the mole that will lessen scarring, discomfort, and downtime. Generally, if cancerous moles are being removed, a more surgical removal method is required to ensure that all cancer cells are removed.

FAQs

CONTACT US

How long does mole removal take?

Shorter than the average lunch break. Including consultation, your treatment will only take half an hour.

Do I need any preperation for mole removal?

Just bring yourself. Dr Targett will prep your treatment area for you.

What can I expect during the treatment?

During the prepping process, a numbing cream will be applied to your mole. Depending on the size and location of your mole, a numbing injection may also be required.

If the mole looks suspicious, Dr Targett will perform a biopsy and send it for a pathology test. In the event that test results are positive for skin cancer, Dr Targett can perform further margin excisions.

Why is it important to see an experienced doctor trained in skin cancer recognition?

Abnormal or unsightly moles can generally be excised in a brief and straightforward outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia by Dr Targett.

Dr Targett has vast experience in skin cancer treatment, particularly in the treatment of malignant melanoma. Dr Targett’s experience and expertise in skin cancer treatment make her an ideal specialist for the identification and treatment of both “normal” non-cancerous moles and “abnormal” pre-cancerous moles.

Along with her knowledge of skin cancer treatment, Dr Targett’s aptitude for cosmetic surgery enables her to minimize the potential of an unsightly scar formation during the mole removal process.

Are there any side effects from mole removal?

You may experience some pain after the mole removal treatment. Chance of infection is low, as long as you keep your wound dry after the procedure.

What aftercare is required after having a mole removed?

Your treatment area will be dressed with a special dressing which prevents your wound from absorbing water. You will be able to shower with it on. The dressing will need changing every three days.

Sutures for moles removed from the face can be removed after one week. Sutures on other body parts can be removed after two weeks. During this time, you should avoid swimming or performing any physical activity that may disrupt the sutures.

After your sutures are removed, if the excision mole removal method was used, scar gel will be applied to your wounds to minimise scarring. For other removal techniques, scar gel can be applied after three days.

Rest assured that Dr Targett will be available for any aftercare treatment you may require.
