Grafts are generally considered fully anchored at around 10 to 14 days. That is the point at which the fibrin clots holding them have been replaced by more permanent tissue connections, and the risk of dislodging one drops sharply.
Before that, a graft that is knocked out cannot be put back. This is why the first fortnight carries so many restrictions.

How grafts anchor, and when
Stabilisation starts almost immediately after placement and builds in stages rather than happening at a single moment.

Protecting the grafts in the meantime
Almost everything that costs someone a graft in this window is mechanical. The precautions all come back to avoiding friction and pressure.
- Sleep on your back, using a neck pillow so the scalp does not rub against bedding
- Avoid tight hats and anything that presses on the recipient area
- Avoid vigorous exercise and activities that cause heavy sweating
- Do not scratch, rub or pick, however tempting the itching becomes
- Keep the area clean and moist exactly as your practitioner directed
A knock counts. Even a light scratch or bumping your head on a car door frame can dislodge a graft during the first two weeks, and a lost graft cannot be replanted. Being deliberate about small movements is worth it for a fortnight.
Common questions
What happens if a graft is dislodged?
It cannot be replaced. That follicle is lost, though a small number will not usually be noticeable in the overall result. Contact your clinic if you think you have disturbed the area.
Can I wash my hair before 14 days?
Gentle washing usually begins around day 10 using a specific low-pressure technique, not normal showering. Follow the method and timing your clinic gave you rather than resuming your usual routine.
Is it normal for grafts to look like scabs?
Yes. Small crusts form over each site and fall away over the following days once washing begins. Let them come away naturally and do not pick at them.
When can I go back to the gym?
Intense exercise, heavy lifting and heavy sweating are generally avoided for 14 days. Light walking is usually fine earlier, but check with your practitioner about your own timeline.
