Why Tear Trough Fillers Help With Loss of Volume

Tear trough fillers model 01, ACM blog

Under eye bags, dark circles and hollow tear troughs are common concerns for patients who come in feeling like they look tired all the time.  This appearance is due to loss of volume of the underlying tissue. We often recommend tear trough filler, which gives a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

This natural loss of volume in the under-eye area is attributed to ageing and lifestyle which results in a lack of support from overlying skin and/or genetics. Yes, unfortunately, some people are more prone to this than others. It’s not uncommon for people to also find the outer sides of the eye (lateral tear trough) have a sunken appearance, puffy eyes and under eye bags.

The Treatment

One solution we find most popular is the injection of dermal filler under the eyes or in the cheek area. This can help to restore loss of volume under the eye, smooth out eye bags and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

This treatment typically takes 45-60 minutes with results appearing almost immediately. For best results, the product will have fully settled within 3-4 weeks.

You are usually able to return to normal day-to-day activities within the 24-48hrs, however, there is the likelihood of bruising and swelling post-treatment. It’s advised to avoid exercising and excessive sweating for the first 48hrs.

Of course, results may vary from patient to patient so before any treatment is performed the patient is to undergo a one-on-one consult with Dr. Rahma Targett.

Downtime & Complications

As with any injectable treatment, there are some side effects and possible risks associated. Due to the high sensitivity of the under-eye area in particular it’s important to see an advanced injector, schedule enough time around this appointment and fully understand the benefits & potential risks.

With the sensitivity of this treatment area in mind, we do expect to see certain side effects within the first 24-72hrs such as swelling, bruising and asymmetry. So don’t panic if you find some swelling and bruising after this treatment. This should typically all subside after the first 72hrs. In saying this, everyone is different. We highly recommend booking a follow-up appointment to ensure the desired result has been achieved and any questions can be answered.

Although uncommon, more serious side effects can include vascular occlusion or blindness, excessive swelling and puffiness, the Tyndall effect (blueish-grey tinge to the skin) and overcorrection resulting in a “fake” look.

Cost

The cost of 1ml of dermal filler is $650. The amount of product needed to achieve your desired look will vary depending on age, condition, loss of volume, lifestyle. Some people may need more filler vs others. All of this will be discussed with you in your initial consult to work out the best treatment plan for you.
