How it works

What are scars and how do they form?

Acne scarring typically occurs when a person suffers from severe acne symptoms and leaves them untreated for a prolonged period of time. Scars also forms from constantly picking at or squeezing acne.

Scarring results from a deeep injury. When inflammation, infection or trauma affects the deeper layers of the skin, a scar tissue formation occurs.  A procedure such as laser scar removal treatment becomes the best option to minimise scarring.

Scarring comes in many different shapes, sizes and even colours. There are five different types of acne scars:

  1. Rolling: Indented, superficial, wave-like scars
  2. Keloid: Raised scars that extend beyond the original wound
  3. Boxcar: Deeply indented, round pitted scars
  4. Ice-pick: Deeply indented, narrow pitted scars
  5. Pigmentation: Discoloration of a scar is referred to as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation but is not a true scar

It should be noted that not all scarring is the same and are awarded different levels of severity. Scarring may be graded as:

  • Grade 1: Slightly visible inconsistencies in the complexion.
  • Grade 2: Visible mild rolling scars.
  • Grade 3: Visible moderate rolling, boxcar and hypertrophic scars.
  • Grade 4: Visible severe icepick or keloid scarring.

Dr Rahma Targett will  diagnose the type and grade of your scarring before prescribing the best treatment option.

What are the options for acne scar treatment?

If you are seeking the best treatment for acne scars there are numerous options available, however, level of success can vary from person to person. It is important to remember that receiving poor treatment can lead to further complications, so always consult with experienced, reliable professionals like the Advanced Cosmetic Medicine team in North Adelaide. In addition to laser scar treatment, options for reducing the effects include:

Venus Viva MD - acne scare treatment

Venus Viva MD is an innovative option for acne scar treatment, utilizing NanoFractional Radio Frequency and SmartScan technology to target scarred areas with precision. This non-invasive procedure stimulates collagen production, reduces hyperpigmentation, and improves skin texture. With minimal downtime, Venus Viva MD offers a safe and effective solution for acne scar treatment.

Chemical Peels - acne scar treatment

We offer varying degrees of Chemical Peels, from superficial to medium depth. Chemical Peels can assist in managing mild to medium scarring, with a series of sessions required to achieve optimum results. The appropriate chemical peel can soften and smooth scarring all while stimulating cellular renewal for a refreshed and re-texturised complexion.

Skin Needling - acne scar treatment

Skin Needling is a highly recommended as the best acne scar treatment. ACM offers a variety of options that are specifically designed to target particular types of acne and the depths of scarring. Skin Needling produces micro channels that rejuvenate the skin and that can break up existing scar tissue of any grade. These channels encourage the generation and distribution of new collagen. New collagen helps build healthy, thicker, and firmer skin around the affected areas. This significantly reduces the depth and appearance of scarring and provides a far more smoother and even skin surface.

Side effects of the needling process are typically minimal and can include swelling, peeling and mild bruising after the treatment. The risk of post-procedure infection is highly unlikely as the micro channels will typically close within minutes.

Microdermabrasion - acne scar treatment

Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment for improving the appearance of acne scars. It works by exfoliating the top layer of skin, which can help reduce the visibility of acne scars over time. However, it may require multiple sessions for noticeable results. It's always best to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best treatment option for your specific skin type and acne scars.

Laser Genesis - acne scar treatment

Laser Genesis administers micro-pulses of laser energy to the skin. The primary process involves "bulk heating," which heats the dermis (the deeper skin layer) without harming the epidermis (the superficial layer that shields against environmental pollutants). As a result, recovery time is minimal compared to more aggressive lasers.

The treatment stimulates collagen remodeling, improves facial redness and brown spots, and has anecdotal evidence of reducing acne through decreased oil production and pore size, as well as enhancing acne scarring through collagen stimulation.

Subcision - acne scar treatment

Subcision is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat depressed acne scars. During the treatment, a dermatologist uses a small needle to break up the fibrous bands beneath the scar tissue, allowing the skin to elevate and fill in the depressed area. This process stimulates the body's natural collagen production, which helps improve the appearance of the scar over time.

Subcision is considered safe and effective for treating certain types of acne scars, and it can be performed on various skin types. While multiple sessions may be required for optimal results, many patients experience noticeable improvement in the texture and appearance of their skin after undergoing subcision treatment.

All treatments we offer for acne scarring effectively reduce their appearance, but some treatments may be more suited to an individual’s health and concerns than other available treatments.

Are any of the treatments for acne scars painful?

All our acne scarring treatments are relatively comfortable, and for most, we administer a topical numbing cream to ensure our patients are comfortable and relaxing during their treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will vary for every individual, based on the extent and severity of their acne scarring and the type of treatment recommended. A course of two to three treatments may be needed to achieve the results patients want.
